Hello, Cancun!

In about 6 days, 5 hours and 15 minutes (give or take) I will be taking my first trip in 2011! Yay! Let the confetti rain! It’s been a long 7 months since I’ve traveled anywhere and a very, very, very long year. After the painful 8-hour GMAT study sessions and weekends filled with graduate school applications and essays, this trip to Cancun is an unexpected reward. It is also just the beginning of great things to come in 2011.

I’ve always been told that good things don’t just fall on your lap. Well, this trip to Cancun did! I was already granted my vacation days and was in the midst of looking for travel deals when Andy Hayes found me the best deal ever! He recommended me for a press trip and wha-la – free trip to Cancun! It landed right on my lap! He certainly had perfect timing. I was lingering close to the brink working 50 hours a week and battling 13.5 hours of commute every week. Andy = Lifesaver.

As I write this post, I’m already thinking about what to bring, what to do, what to see, what to eat and most of all, who I’ll be meeting! I’ll be staying at the Cancun Caribe Park Royal Grande so rest assured, there will be posts and pictures coming up very soon.

Ooh, so exciting!! About time you got on the road again! ;-)

I personally LOVED Senor Frogs. One of the funnest bars EVER. And yes, it’s so cheesy, but fun cheesy!

Senor Frogs is definitely the party place!!!! I highly recommend “skipping” Cancun and heading down to Playa Del Carmen as much as you can, it’s only a 45 min cab ride and SO worth it. The vibe there is just a tiny bit quieter if you want it to be (there’s still quite the party scene if you don’t want quiet) and it’s less touristy since it still flies under the radar in comparison to the flashier Cancun. Most definitely take in a “fire show” while you are there. It is not to be missed! SO wish we were going to be there at the same time. Andi & I leave in 15 days for Cancun & Playa Del carmen!!

P.S. SO about time you get away!!! I am really excited for you!!

I tend to follow the older, more European crowd to Playa del Carmen, but the young folks in the family and their friends LOVE Cancun. According to them, one of the best things to do is to buy a ticket at the hotel that puts you with a clubbing group and guide. It includes an hour or so in 3 or 4 clubs, drinks, transportation, and fulltime guide/host to see that the group gets here and there and has a good time.

Great way to mee other young people

Oh that is awesome. Congrats on winning the trip!!! I can not wait to hear about your time in Cancun and some insight about that amazing city. I have never been but will be there in June for my brothers wedding.

SHHHYEAH, see ya there! And Kate got it right, Senor Frogs is a BLAST! So is Coco Bongo…but I’ve only been to the ones in the Playa del Carmen. This will be a new experience for me. :) Mmmm, beach…

If you make it off the resort complex head to the ADO bus station in the main part of town. Outside there are two ladies making over ten different kinds of tacos. They are famous amongst locals and make the best chile rellenos tacos. One of the best things I’ve ever eaten.

Congrats to the press trip, Monica! Cancun and Playa del Carmen, like Kirsten suggested, sound like ideal destinations for a well-needed break from work. Have fun!

    FREE Trip!?! That is awesome!

I was in Cancun 10 years ago. I was living in Mexico, and sat on a Mexican bus for 24 hours to get there. All I did was try to go to all the American restaurants so I could get a real cheeseburger. So I would recommend the Outback adn Chillis for that.

Thanks Matt! Hope to meet you on the road one day. :D

Taking in a fire show is a MUST in Mexico. If they have not planned for you to do so already when you arrive, simply ask and I know they can hook you up w/ attending one easily. They happen all up and down the Riviera Maya almost every night. And just you wait, hot doesn’t begin to describe it!
